The Best Dark Sky Sites in the US for Astrophotography

The United States has more certified International Dark Sky Places than almost anywhere else, which makes “just go somewhere dark” less useful advice than it sounds - somewhere dark and somewhere actually set up for astrophotography are not always the same place. Here is where the difference matters.

Big Bend National Park, Texas

Certified Gold-tier - the strictest rating International Dark Sky Places gives - back in 2012, and the surrounding Greater Big Bend International Dark Sky Reserve, spanning the border into Mexico, became the largest dark-sky-certified area anywhere when it was designated in 2022. The National Park Service’s own night sky team has measured Big Bend as the darkest sky in the lower 48 states.

That scale is the point: an enormous protected area means the sky stays dark from horizon to horizon, not just directly overhead, which matters for anything wide-field - Milky Way panoramas, nightscapes, mosaics that would otherwise catch a glow from a nearby town at the frame’s edge.

Cherry Springs State Park, Pennsylvania

The one to know if you are on the East Coast rather than planning a trip specifically around dark skies. Cherry Springs became the second International Dark Sky Park in 2007 and is the darkest site east of the Mississippi, with 60 to 85 nights a year rated as having ideal observing conditions - genuinely dark, but also genuinely accessible from most of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic without a multi-day drive.

It hosts two organised star parties a year: the Cherry Springs Star Party in June, run by the Astronomical Society of Harrisburg, and the Black Forest Star Party in September, run by Central Pennsylvania Observers. Both draw several hundred people, which means both are also a genuinely good place to see other people’s rigs, ask questions, and get a second opinion on a setup that isn’t working.

Texas Star Party, Davis Mountains, West Texas

Not a park you can visit any time - a week-long event, drawing around 500 deep-sky imagers and observers to a private site in the Davis Mountains specifically because the surrounding region has some of the darkest, most stable skies in the country. If Big Bend is the destination for a planned dark-sky trip, Texas Star Party is the destination for a planned dark-sky trip with several hundred other astrophotographers doing the same thing alongside you - worth it specifically for that, in a way a solo trip to any park isn’t.

Grand Canyon and Bryce Canyon National Parks

Both certified International Dark Sky Parks, both far better known for daytime scenery than night skies, and both genuinely good for the latter regardless - the same remoteness and protected status that keeps the landscape undeveloped keeps the sky dark too. Neither requires the specific trip-planning Big Bend or a star party does; if you are visiting either park for the obvious reason, bringing a camera for after dark costs nothing extra.

Finding what’s actually near you

The Astronomical League - an umbrella organisation of more than 330 member astronomy clubs across the country - is the fastest way to find a local group rather than a destination park. A nearby club generally knows the actual best local site better than any national list can, including the unofficial spots that never get certified but that everyone in the area already uses.

Wherever you end up

None of the above changes how you process the result. Akastroid grades and stacks a session the same way whether it was shot at Big Bend’s near-zero light pollution or a backyard under a Bortle 6 suburban sky - the gradient removal step exists specifically for the second case, and reads what your particular sky did to your particular frames rather than assuming a fixed answer. A dark site gets you a better starting point; it does not change what the software has to do with what you brought back.
