Akastroid compared with other astrophotography software
Each page lists where the other program does better, and where I have measured both on the same data, the numbers.
Akastroid vs DeepSkyStacker
Free, Windows-only, and it stops at the stack. The differences are Mac support, field rotation, named frame rejections and everything after the integration.
Akastroid vs Siril
Free and cross-platform. Stacking the public M42 LRGB set, star width and colour alignment came out level with Siril 1.4.4 and our star signal-to-noise about 10% lower. On one Orion stack our automatic finish read 4.6x the signal-to-noise and a 2.6% sky gradient against 21.6%, with Siril's stars 3.4% tighter. The main difference is who has to know the sequence.
Akastroid vs PixInsight
The highest ceiling in astrophotography and months to learn. Masking is the gap, and using both is often the right answer.
Akastroid vs AutoStakkert
The standard planetary stacker, free and Windows-only. Measured on the same captures: level on detail, quieter on every one, including the ones where it wins on detail.
Akastroid vs RegiStax
Wavelet sharpening you set by hand, against sharpening measured from the stack. Measured on the same Mars: level at 1-2 px detail, cleaner limb.
For the whole field at once, including Astro Pixel Processor and GraXpert, read the 2026 buying guide or what Akastroid replaces, and what it does not.
A shorter page sorts the options by what you shoot: which astrophotography software to use.
The workflow itself, step by step, is on how it works.
